Wonambi is a species of snake from the Miocene to the Pleistocene of Australia. It was similar to modern-day pythons, but wasn't related to them, instead being related to the prehistoric snake Madtsoia. It was most likely an ambush predator and would have killed by constricting its prey. They would ambush their prey around water holes, waiting for kangaroos or other animals to come and drink before attacking. Its head was rather small and could not unhinge as wide as the jaws of modern snakes, which prevented it from consuming larger prey. It is the first extinct snake to be found in Australia.
