Wahlisaurus massarae

Wahlisaurus massarae

Wahlisaurus is a species of ichthyosaur from the Early Jurassic of England. It was named in honor of paleontologists Bill Whal and Prof. Judy Massare (giving it its scientific name W. massarae) who have both contributed significantly to the study of ichthyosaurs. It had been stored in the collections of Leicester's New Walk Museum for more than 60 years before scientists determined that it had anatomical features that differed from other ichthyosaur species. It is the first new genus of ichthyosaur from the British Early Jurassic to be described since 1986.
