Volkheimeria (named after Wolfgang Volkheimer) is an extinct genus of sauropod that lived in Early Jurassic of Argentina. The type and only species is Volkheimeria chubutensis.

Discovery and Naming[]

The holotype ( was discovered in the site of Cerro Cóndor Sur, Chubut Province. In 1979, Jose Bonaparte named it as a new genus of dinosaur along with Piatnitzkysaurus and Patagosaurus. The generic name is named after Argentinean paleontologist Wolfgang Volkheimer, while the specific name is named after Chubut Province in Argentina.

Description[]

The size of a fully-grown individual is not known, so it could have been larger when reaching the adult stage. It consists of a partial cervical vertebra, two complete and two partial dorsal vertebrae, part of the sacrum, several incomplete caudal vertebrae, partial ilia, a pubis, an ischium, a femur, and a tibia. and isolated tooth (MPEF-PV 10860) might belong to this genus.

Classification[]

It is classified as a member of eusauropoda. The sister taxon is Spinophorosaurus.

Paleoecology[]

It lived with Asfaltovenator, Eoabelisaurus, and others in Canadon Asfalto Formation.
