Tiamat (named after a mesopotamian goddess) is a genus of titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur that lived in the mid Cretaceous (Albian-Cenomanian) of Brazil. The type and only species is Tiamat valdecii.
Discovery and Naming[]
The holotype was discovered in sediments of Acu formation. It is also hypothesized that an undescribed osteoderm specimen (UFRJ-DG-549-R) found in 2019 may belong to Tiamat as well, though this is still up for debate. In 2024, Pereira described it as a new species of basal titanosaur. The name "Tiamat" is from a goddess in Sumerian mythology, and the specific name is named after Dr. Valdeci dos Santos Junior. It is the first dinosaur to be discovered in the Potiguar basin.
Description[]
Tiamat is from several fragmented caudal vertebrae, located in the middle and base of the tail.
Classification[]
Pereira classified it as a member of basal titanosaur, with Andesaurus as a sister taxon.
