Dinopedia

Thanatosdrakon is a genus of azhdarchid pterosaur from the late cretaceous Plottier formation in Argentina.[1]

Description[]

Thanatosdrakon was a large animal, and had a wingspan of 7 to 9 meters.[1] This would make Thanatosdrakon the one of the largest pterosaurs to come out of South America, only rivaled in size by the Ornithocheirid Tropeognathus.[2]

Classification[]

Cladistic analysis recovered Thanatosdrakon to be nested deep within Azdarchidae, as a Quetzalcoatline.[1] This makes Thanatosdrakon the oldest member of Quetzalcoatlinae discovered so far.[1] The cladogram below shows Quetzalcoatlinae and the placement of Thanatosdrakon as described in the paper.

Habitat & Paleoecology[]

Thanatosdrakon was found in the Plottier Formation in floodplain deposits of ephemeral meandering systems meaning that Thanatosdrakon amaru inhabited continental environments.

It would have coexisted with a wide array of dinosaurs; A titanosaurian(Described as Titanosaurus sp.)[3], "Antarctosaurus" giganteus[3], an Indeterminate Carnosaurian[3], Muyelensaurus pechi[4], 3 Indeterminate Theropods[4][5][6], 4 Indeterminate Titanosaurians[7][8][9][5], an Indeterminate Tetanuran[9], an Indeterminate Carcharodontosaurid[5], an Indeterminate Coelurosaurian[5], an Indeterminate Unenlagiine[5], an Indeterminate Ornithopod[5], an Indeterminate Aeoleosaurin[10], Petrobrasaurus puestohernandezi[6], Notocolossus gonzalezparejasi[11], and an indeterminate Titanosaurian[12].

T. amaru would have also lived alongside other animals; An indeterminate Testudine[3], Linderochelys rinconensis[4], Indeterminate Chelid[8], a possible Indeterminate Chelid[5], Rionegrochelys caldieroi[5], an Indeterminate Crocodyliforme[5], and an Indeterminate Mesoeucrocodylian[10].
