The Tertiary period is the first period of the Cenozoic era, between the Cretaceous and Quaternary periods, and comprising the Paleogene and Neogene subperiods. It lasted from the K-Pg extinction event 66 million years ago to the beginning of the Quaternary 2.6 million years ago.
