Strophomena is a genus of brachiopod from the Middle to Upper Ordovician. Fossils of the genus have been found in Africa, Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America. Their shells were wide and semi-circular, with one side being concave and another being convex. Compared to other brachiopods Strophomena had a greatly reduced pedicle, meaning that they would not have anchored themselves to the ground. It has been theorized that they could have moved around by rapidly snapping their valves much like how scallops do.[1]
