Sororavis is an extinct genus of birds from the Eocene period. It lived in Britain around 55 million years ago.
History[]
The first specimen of Sororavis, NMS.Z.2021.40.75, was discovered in 1986. However it wasn’t named until 2023, by then 3 specimens were known. Along with the description of Sororavis, was the description of the extinct family Morsoravidae which also includes the genera Morsoravis and Pumiliornis.
Description[]
Soroavis was similar in size to its relative Morsoravis. The skull of Soroavis was similar to that of a thrush, which have fairly thin heads and fairly long beaks. Its proportions were more similar to the proportions of a songbird. It is theorized that Soroavis sucked nectar from flowers and also ate fruit.
Classification[]
Soroavis is one of three members that make up the prehistoric family Morsoavidae. This family was related to the extant Parrots and Songbirds.
