Protostega (early roof) is an extinct genus of marine turtle that lived throughout the Late Cretaceous Period. It reached up to three meters (10 ft) in total body length and was the second largest sea turtle to have ever lived, only beaten by Archelon. Its carapace lacked scutes (Osteoderms), which made it vulnerable but lighter and able to move quicker (much like the modern leatherback sea turtle). Its diet probably consisted on slower moving sea creatures like jellyfish and shellfish.
