Platanavis (meaning "Platan bird") is an extinct genus of ornithothorace[1] bird discovered in the Bissekty Formation, located in the Kyzylkum Desert in Uzbekistan. One species is known: Platanavis nana, which was described in 1992 by paleontologist Lev Nesov.[2][3][4]

Description[]

Platanavis is only known from a single tiny synsacrum,[5] which was similar to that of the Gobipteryx. This identification might make Platanavis an enantiornithine, but this is a very preliminary idea. Due to the structure of its synsacrum, it was probably a short-tailed avialan, somewhere between the Enantiornithes and the Euornithines. It had a narrow, deep and ungrooved hip, but apart from that, almost nothing is known.[5]

Paleoecology[5][]

Platanavis was found in the Bissekty Formation, rich in fossils dating back to around 90 million years ago (Cenomanian-Turonian). It would have lived alongside the hadrosaurs Gilmoreosaurus, Levnesovia and Cionodon, the basal ornithopod Amtosaurus, the ankylosaur Bissektipelta, the ceratopsian Turanoceratops, the non-avian theropods Archaeornithomimus, Caenagnathasia, Euronychodon, Itemirus, Kuszholia, Timurlengia, Urbacodon and Zhyraornis, the avians Abavornis, Catenolemius, Explorornis, Ichthyornis, Incolornis, Kizylkumavis, Lenesornis, Nanantius and Sazavis, the pterosaur Azhdarcho, the ichthyodectid fish Aidachar and an unnamed plesiosaur which was tolerant of brackish water.
