Palaeopanthera is an extinct genus of big cat endemic to the Himalayas from Miocene to the Pliocene. It is one of the oldest known pantherine cats discovered. It was initially placed in the genus Panthera but was under question due to the fossil being incomplete. In 2023, it was given a new genus Palaeopanthera based on its differences from the genus Panthera.

Characteristics[]

Not much is known about this cat, though it is likely to have resembled the extant Snow Leopard based on its habitat and appearance, possibly a close relative or even an ancestor.

In Popular Culture[]

  • Palaeopanthera blytheae made its first media appearance in Jurassic World: Alive as a legendary snow leopard under the previous genus name.
