Nhandumirim (meaning 'Small rhea' in Tupi-Guarani) is a genus of basal saturnaliid sauropodomorph from the Late Triassic Santa Maria Formation of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Carnian, dating to approximately 233-228 Ma). It is one of the earliest known sauropodomorphs from Brazil.

Discovery[]

The type and only species, Nhandumirim waldsangae, was named and described in 2019 by JĂșlio Marsola, Jonathas Bittencourt, Richard J Butler, and Atila Darosais. The generic name is derived from the Tupi-Gurani words for "small rhea," while the specific name is derived from Waldsanga, an alternate name of the site, Cerro da Alemoa, where the only known specimen was found.

The holotype and only known specimen, LPRP/USP 0651, was discovered in Cerro da Alemoa in Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil from the Santa Maria Formation dating from the Carnian, about 233-228 million years old. It consists of a partial skeleton which includes several vertebrae, a right ilium, and most of a right hindlimb.
