Lucy is the name given to the Australopithecus afarensis specimen AL 288-1. Lucy was an important find in the case that early humans walked upright.

Discovery[]

Lucy was discovered on November 24th 1974 by Donald Johanson in Hadar, Ethiopia. She was named after the song by The Beatles, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which was playing on the radio at the time of her discovery.

Classification[]

Lucy was originally thought to be the direct ancestor to humans, but that idea is now less widespread. She was also not believed to be a new species until later after her discovery.

Cause of Death[]

Lucy probably died from a fall out of a tree she had climbed.[1]

In Popular Culture[]

  • Lucy appeared in Walking with Cavemen.
  • Lucy was mentioned in the PBS NOVA documentary Becoming Human.
  • While not directly stated, in Walking with Beasts a female A. afarensis dies on a riverside similar to Lucy.
