Description[]
Jormungandr is a small mosasaur (sharing similar features with Clidastes) named after the Norse Serpent Jörmungandr in what is now North Dakota.
Discovery[]
The holotype specimen was first discovered in 2015 in North Dakota In the Pierre Shale. It was over a multi year period between 2015 and 2018 that more remains were discovered. It was even nicknamed “Georgie”. A study at the American Museum of Natural History showed that it was somewhere between Mosasaurus and Clidastes. In 2023 it was given the genus Jormungandr walhallaensis. After a being from Norse Mythology.
