Igai semkhu reconstruction

Igai is an extinct genus of titanosaur sauropod from the Late Cretaceous Period. It was preserved in the Quseir Formation is what is now Egypt. The type and only species of the genus is Igai semkhu.

Description[]

Relatively slim, Igai is mainly distinguished by differences in its limb bones. Particularly, its first and second metatarsals have grooves unique to the genus. Igai has been estimated at roughly 10-15 meters in length, or around 33-49 feet.

Classification[]

Igai belongs to the Saltasauridae family, being closely related to Saltasaurus, though comparatively smaller. Similarly to most later Titanosaurus from Eurasia and Africa, they are far smaller in size than others in the family.

Paleoenvironment[]

Igai lived in Egypt within the Quseir Formation. The Quseir Formation had a tropical and humid climate, near bodies of freshwater. It contained large bands of sandstone and siltstone, assisting in preservation of animals. The formation also overlaps with the Taref Formation.
