Poster released alongside GIANTS trailer

GIANTS is a five-part documentary series that showcase the megafauna of Earth. The series stars filmmaker and adventurer Dan O'Neill as host, where he and a field crew discuss prehistoric megafauna while comparing and observing their modern day relatives. GIANTS was created by Off The Fence Productions to be featured on CuriosityStream in 2023.

Traveling across the globe from Australia to Africa, O'Neill aims to find evolutionary secrets found in the closest relatives of several massive extinct species.

Fauna Featured[]

Extinct[]

Extant[]

  • African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana)
  • Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
  • African Lion (Panthera leo)
  • Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
  • Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias)
  • Leopard (Panthera pardus)

Scientific Inaccuracies and Speculative Information[]

  • Despite being one of the largest cats of all time, the American Lion wasn't as tall as a human, as the footage in the series shows O'Neill standing almost parallel to the shoulder of the animal in height. This wasn't the case, and was should be a bit shorter at the shoulder.
  • O'Neill calls the American Lion an American cave lion, which can confuse audiences as there were actual Cave Lions (Panthera spelaea) who were different than the ones featured in the series. The nickname he gives the American Lion also is misleading as the felines favored grasslands over caves.
  • Sarcosuchus is nicknamed the "Supercroc" though Sarcosuchus isn't really a true crocodilian, but a close relative.
  • The American Lion is stated to be 900 pounds in weight in the series, though estimates put the animal at a weight closer to 800 instead.
