Fluvionectes (the name meaning: river swimmer, with words both from both Latin and Greek) is a genus and species of of elasmosaurid plesiosaur that found in the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta, Canada. It is only known from a single specimen, the holotype, which includes parts of the trunk area.[1]
Description[]
Fluvionectes estimations conclude that the species, most likely, reached 5 metres (16 ft) long. The Fluvionectes appears to have been a species that adapted to freshwater habitat, in contrast to most elasmosaurs species which were oceanic or sea based.[2]
Classification[]
The describers placed Fluvionectes in the Elasmosauridae, in a clade with Albertonectes, Nakonanectes, Styxosaurus, and Terminonatator, which by definition places it in the Elasmosaurinae subfamily.
