Description[]

Dandakosaurus indicus by teratophoneus-d4n43il

Life Restoration by teratophoneus.

Dandakosaurus was probably a large theropod and possibly the largest known theropod from Early Jurassic, however due to its fragmentary nature and the 2 vertebrae being classified as of Kotasaurus, it is uncertain.

Discovery and Naming[]

Dandakosaurus fossils

The partial pubis (a) and ischium (b) of Dandakosaurs indicus.

The holotype was discovered by during 1962 expedition in Dandakaranya forest of India by Jain and Chowdhury. They classified it as an indeterminate carnosaurian. The holotype consists of partial pubis and ischium.

In 1982, Yadagiri described it as a new genus and species of theropod, Dandakosaurs indicus, where the genus name "Dandako" is after Dandakaranya forest where the holotype was discovered and "saurus" is the greek word for lizard. The species name"indicus" is after the country of India.

Classification[]

Dandakosaurus was possibly either a megalosauroid, a basal neotheropod similar to Sinosaurus or Dilophosaurus or a ceratosaurian.
