Copepteryx
Copep
Scientific classification

Copepteryx is an extinct genus of flightless bird of the family Plotopteridae. It lived in the Oligocene period of Japan from 28.4—23 million years ago. Its name comes from the words "Kope pteryx" meaning "oar wing". It was a diving bird and hunted for most if not all of its food underwater.

Description[]

As a plotopterid bird, Copepteryx bears a strong resemblance to penguins, with paddle-like wings.[1] However, it is not a penguin, and is instead a type of seabird that is an example of convergent evolution.[2]
