Comptonatus (meaning the Compton Thunderer) is an extinct genus of ornithopod dinosaur that lived on Isle of Wight, England. The type species is Comptonatus chasei.
Discovery and Naming[]
The holotype (IWCMS 2014.80) was unearthed in September-October 2013. It was described as a new genus by Lockwood, Martil, and Madiment in 2024. The generic name combines the location Compton and "tonatus", while the specific name is named after Nick Chasei.
Description[]
Its material has fragmented skeletons, and it lived during the Early Cretaceous. It is the most complete ornithopod found in the Isle of Wright, England. It differs from other iguanodontids by having grooved primary ridges in the dentary and maxillary crowns. The right maxilla is preserved, but with anterior losses. The maxilla is triangular.

It is classified as a member of Iguanodontidae.
Paleoecology[]
It coexisted with Brightstoneus, Hypsilophodon, Iguanodon, Neovenator and others in the Wessex Formation.
