Compsosuchus (meaning elegant crocodile) is an abelisaurid theropod dinosaur from the Lameta Formation of late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) India. Known only from an axis bone, the species is often considered a normen dubium.
Discovery and naming[]
Life Restoration as an abelisaurid.
The Compsosuchus was described by von Huene and Matley in the year 1933 based on the axis vertebra discovered between the year 1917 and 1919. The type and the only known specimen is GSI K27/578 (which consistes of the axis bone). The genus is currently considered a nomen dubium since its known from very limited remains.
Classification[]
When first described, Huene and Matley (1933) and Molnar (1990) thought that it is from the family Allosauridae since its axis bone shows similarities with the axis bones of the Allosaurus and other allosaurids. In 2004, the genus was reclassified as an abelisaurid without any evidence. In 2011, it was reclassified as a noasaurid, but in 2024 it was reclassified as an abelisaurid.
