The Maotianshan Shales have yielded lots of Early Cambrian fauna. They include Kuanyangia, Kunmingella, Sidneyia, Yunnanocephalus, Haikouella, Haikouichthys, Myllokunmingia, Yunnanozoon, Yuknessia, Hallucigenia, Wiwaxia, Selkirkia, and Yuyuanozoon.

Alongside the Burgess Shale this formation was yielded lots of fauna that “opens a window to the Cambrian.”

Triassic[]

Many early kinds of Ichthyosaurs lived during this time like Baisesaurus, Shastasaurus and Himalayasaurus.

Jurassic[]

The Lower Lufeng Series has yielded many kinds of dinosaurs including Tatisaurus, Yunnanosaurus, Sinosaurus, Shuangbaisaurus, Panguraptor, Fulengia and Lufengosaurus.

The Shishugou Formation has also yielded many dinosaur fauna. They include Sinraptor, Shishugounykus, Guanlong, Haplocheirus, Klamelisaurus, Zuolong, Monolophosaurus and the mammal Volaticotherium.

The Shaximiao Formation is one of the lead places in dinosaur finding. The Zigong Dinosaur Museum houses the fauna that has been discovered. It includes the Sauropods Yuzhoulong, Omeisaurus, Protognathosaurus, Abrosaurus, Shunosaurus, Daanosaurus, Dashanpusaurus, Zigongosaurus, Bellusaurus and Mamenchisaurus. The Hypsilophodonts Yandusaurus, Agilisaurus, Hexinlusaurus, and Xiaosaurus. The Stegosaurs Bashanosaurus, Gigantspinosaurus and Tuojiangosaurus. The Theropods Yangchuanosaurus, Sinraptor, Leshansaurus, Xuanhanosaurus, and Chienkosaurus. And the pterosaur Angustinaripterus.

Cretaceous[]

The Yixian Formation has yielded incredible fauna. This includes the sauropods Euhelopus, Ruixinia and Liaoningotitan. The theropods Tianyuraptor, Yixianosaurus, Yutyrannus,Protarchaeopteryx, Sinosauropteryx, Sinocalliopteryx, Sinornithosaurus, Dilong, Graciliraptor, Hexing, Jinfengopteryx, Zhongjianosaurus, Caudipteryx, and Beipiaosaurus. The ornithopods Jeholosaurus, Jinzhousaurus, Changmiania and Bolong. The ceratopsian Psittacosaurus. The ankylosaurs Chuanqilong and Liaoningosaurus. And many birds and pterosaurs.

The Hekou Group has yielded the Iguanodont Lanzhousaurus and the sauropod Daxiatitan.

At the end of the Cretaceous the Nanxiong Formation was dominated by the Oviraptorids Wulatelong, Ganzhousaurus, Huanansaurus, Jiangxisaurus, and Corythoraptor. The sauropod Gannansaurus. The hadrosaur Microhadrosaurus. And the theropods Qianzhousaurus and Nanshiungosaurus.
