The Paleocene was the first period of the Tertiary. This was the beginning of the age of mammals because a giant meteorite had ended the dinosaur world 65mya. The Earth had gone from a world of wide open fields to thick jungles like the world of the Carboniferous. Small mammals darted about the forest floor until they could become the largest animals on Earth. The Terror Birds were the main carnivores on land, and sharks were the predators of the sea.
