As the temperature gradually cooled, mammals began to grow thicker coats of hair. Elephants, rhinos, gazelle, and other mammals had reached the sizes that they are today. One of the most important events of the Miocene was the Great Exchange between South America and North America. The two continents had finally collided and formed a land bridge which animals could now cross. Glyptodon, Smilodon, and Terror Birds crossed back and forth using the new land bridge.
