Creodonts are an extinct order of carnivorous mammals that were the first to evolve at the beginning of the Paleocene as soon as the dinosaurs died out 64 million years ago. They are divided into two families, much like the caniforms and feliforms of today, Oxyaenidae and Hyaenodontidae with the former being more cat-like (Sarkastodon, Patriofelis, etc.), and the latter being more dog-like based on fossils (Hyaenodon, Amphicyon, etc.). The last of the creodonts survived to the Miocene 11 million years ago before going extinct, giving rise to the caniforms and feliforms.
