Arthropoda is a phylum of invertebrates characterized by the possession of an exoskeleton made of chitin for support, a body made up of segments, and multiple appendages. This phylum is by far the largest of the animal phyla, with a diverse group of up to 10 million species. Famous arthropods include insects, arachnids (spiders and scorpions), crabs, centipedes, barnacles, and horseshoe crabs. Famous extinct arthropods include Anomalocaris (regarded the first superpredator ever), the sea scorpion clade of Eurypterida, the only extinct arthropod class Trilobita, and the largest arthropod in history Arthropleura.
