Campananeyen (meaning Las Campanas air) is an extinct genus of rebbachisaurid sauropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Candeleros Formation of Argentina. The type and the only known species is Campananeyen fragilissimus, known from a fragmentary skeleton.
Discovery and naming[]
The holotype specimen (MMch-PV 71) was discovered in sediments of the Candeleros Formation (Barda Atravesada de Las Campanas locality) near Villa El Chocón in Neuquén Province of Argentina. The specimen consists of a braincase and the right quadrate from the skull, a partial dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebra, pieces of the ilia, and two ungual phalanges. The cranial remains were described in a scientific paper published in 2016, but were not named.
In 2024, Lerzo described the specimen as a new genus of rebbachisaurid. The generic name Campananeyen is named after Las Campanas and eyen meaning air, referring to the extreme pneumatic qualities of the holotype specimen.
Classification[]
Lerzo classified Campananeyen as a basal rebbachisaurid as a sister taxon to Sidersaura.
Paleoenvironment[]
Since Campananeyen lived in Candeleros Formation, it coexisted with a lot of other sauropods like some fellow rebbachisaurids like Limaysaurus, Nopcsaspondylus, and Rayososaurus, some titanosaurs like Andesaurus and a large unnamed specimen. Theropods like Alnashetri , Bicentenaria , Buitreraptor, Ekrixinatosaurus and the Giganotosaurus were also present in its formation. Some ornithischians like Jakapil and an unnamed iguanodontian ichnotaxa were present as well as various animals including Ceratodus, Avitabatrachus, and indeterminate azhdarchid pterosaur, Araripesuchus, Najash, Prochelidella, some small lizards like Tika and Priosphenodon, and Cronopio.
