Caletodraco (meaning Caleti dragon) is an extinct genus of abelisaurid that lived in France. The type species is Caletodraco cottardi.
Discovery and Naming[]
The holotype (MHNH 2024.1.1.) was discovered by Nicolas Cottard during an expedition in 2021 and 2023. Then, he gave the fossils to the museum. In 2024, It was described as a new species of abelisaurs. The generic name combines Caleti, a Celtic tribe that lived around the fossil's discovery and draco, while the generic name is named after Nicolas Cottard.
Description[]
The holotype includes a sacrum,fragmented ilia,caudal vertebra, and various fragmented bones, which are possibly ribs. Its size is also similar to Skorpiovenator. The shape of the transverse process on the caudal vertebra is a feature that distinguishes it from other abelisaurids. A tooth is also found, and it might be a predator or scavenger. It is one of the oldest known Brachyrostra. It is the first abelisaur named outside of South America.
