Bolg (named after the goblin in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit) is an extinct species of monstersaurian lizard that lived in Late Cretaceous of Utah, US. The type species is Bolg amondol.

Discovery and Naming[]

The holotype (UMNH VP 16266) was discovered by Joseph Sertich in 2005 in the outcrops of the Kaiparowits Formation. The specimen is consisted of a fragmentary skeleton. In 2025, it was described by Woolley and his collegues. The generic name is named after the goblin in The Hobbit, while the specific name consists of two Elvish words, amon and dol.

Description[]

It consists of a skeleton, such as premaxilla, right maxilla, dentaries, etc. The osteoderms are also present. It was left in a jar before its description in 2025.

Classification[]

It is classified as a member of Monstersauria. Its sister taxon is Gobiderma pulchrum.

Paleoecology[]

It coexisted with Brachychampsa, Kosmoceratops, Akainacephalus, Utahceratops, Teratophoneus, and others.
