Bidentalia is an extinct group of dicynodonts that lived from the Mid-Permian to the Norian of the Triassic.
Phylogeny[]
The clade of Bidentalia is a large one, containing 2 smaller groups (Cryptodontia and Dicynodontoidea), which include up to 8 families and some basal members. The basal genera don't have a distinct family, but are included in Bidentalia as its most specific clade, such as Rastodon and Elph. The families in each group are as follows:
Cryptodontia[]
- Rhachiocephalidae. Includes 2 genera: Rhachiocephalus (type genus) and Kitchinganomodon.
- Geikiidae. Includes 6 genera: Bulbasaurus, Odontocyclops, Geikia (type genus), Idelesaurus, Pelanomodon, and Aulacephalodon.
- Oudenodontidae. Includes at least 2 genera: Oudenodon (type genus) and Tropidostoma.
Dicynodontoidea[]
- Lystrosauridae. Includes 3 confirmed genera: Euptychognathus , Kwazulusaurus, and Lystrosaurus (type genus). It also potentially includes Syops, Sintocephalus, Basilodon, and Jimusaria.
- Shansiodontidae. Includes 4 genera: Vinceria, Shansiodon (type genus), Tetragonias, and Rhinodicynodon.
- Stahleckeridae. Includes 12 confirmed genera: Placerias, Zambiasaurus, Moghreberia, Lisowicia, Pentasaurus, Woznikella, Eubrachiosaurus, Jachaleria, Sangusaurus, Ischigualastia, Stahleckeria (type genus), and Ufudocyclops.
- Dicynodontidae. Includes all Dicynodon species.
- Kannemeyeriidae (sometimes not considered monophyletic). Includes 13 species: Parakannemeyeria, Dinodontosaurus, Wadiasaurus, Repelinosaurus, Dolichuranus, Sinokannemeyeria, Uralokannemeyeria, Rhadiodromus, Xiyukannemeyeria, Kannemeyeria (type genus), Angonisaurus, Rabidosaurus, and Rechnisaurus.
- Counillonia: a basal genus.
- Taoheodon: a basal genus.
