Arctodus, also known as Short-Faced Bear or Mega Bear, is an extinct species of bear from the Pleistocene.
Description[]
Arctodus was a large ursine carnivore, resembling other large bears of the modern era. Its body length was roughly 2.7-3.5 meters with a standing height of 3.05-3.5 meters; it stood 1.6-1.7 meters at the shoulder. The legs are proportionally longer than their current counterparts, particularly the forelimbs. The feet of Arctodus faced forward, letting it walk like most other quadrupeds rather than the "pigeon-toed" gait of other bear species.
Behavior[]
Like most predators and its relatives (bears), seldom hunt their own food. But rather to scavenge from smaller predators, using its size to intimidate the predator contesting the meal. The amount of female remains found near caves suggests the genus used said caves for denning, mostly while pregnant.
Arctodus was a solitary animal, only meeting other individuals when mating or with cubs.
