Archaeornithomimus
Archaeornithomimus (meaning “Ancient Bird Mimic”) is a genus of ornithomimid that lived during the late Cretaceous period in China. It was found in the Iren Dabasu Formation.
Discovery and naming[]
In 1923 paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews lead an expedition to Inner Mongolia. They found remains of an ornithomimid and named it Ornithomimus asiaticus. But in 1972 it was found to be its own species and it was named as Archaeornithomimus.
Description[]
It was medium sized and was about 11 feet long.
Classification[]
It was classified as a member of Ornithomimidae.
Paleoecology[]
It lived in the Iren Dabasu Formation along with the sauropod Sonidosaurus, the ornithopods Gilmoreosaurus and Bactrosaurus, the oviraptorid Gigantoraptor, the therizinosaurs Neimongosaurus and Erliansaurus, and the tyrannosaur Alectrosaurus.
