Life restoration/illustration of the Sauropod

Arackar (meaning "bones of the Atacamenians" in Kunza), was a Litostrothian Sauropod that was found in the Hornitos Formation of Chile, South America. Arackar dates back 83.6 mya to 66 mya (Campanian to Maastrichtian) middle to late Cretaceous. Arackar is currently a monotypic genus, and was named by Rubilar-Rogers in 2021.[1]

Discovery and naming[]

Arackar's fossils were first discovered in 1993 but not named until 2021, by Rubilar. The full binomial name, Arackar licanantay, translates to "bones of the Atacamenians" in the Kunza language.

The holotype is estimated to be 21 feet long(6.3 meters). It is unknown what the size of a fully grown Arackar Licanantay is.

Classification[]

Arackar was placed in the Titanosauria in 2021 and within it in the Lithostrotia, as a sister species of Isisaurus which together form a sister clade to Rapetosaurus, within the Saltasauridae. This clade is sister to another clade consisting of the Opisthocoelicaudiinae and Trigonosaurus+Saltasaurinae.
