Anthracotheres are a family of extinct Artiodactyl ungulates from the Eocene to the Pliocene.  This group evolved into the hippos and whales of today.  They thrived primarily in Africa and Eurasia, but a few managed to reach North America.  A few common members are Anthracotherium, Elomeryx, Libycosaurus, and Merycopotamus.
