Amniotes are the first reptiles on Earth.  They appeared during the Carboniferous.  The first reptiles were called Amniotes because they were tetrapods who laid eggs on land, and the eggs were filled with amniotic fluid.  The Amniotes evolved from amphibians like the Anthracosaurs.  The Amniotes evolved into the reptiles, birds, and mammals of today.
