The American Mountain Deer (Odocoileus lucasi) is an extinct species of North American deer. The deer was most likely wiped out by paleo-Indians that arrived on the North American continent a few thousand years ago.
Classification[]
The deer was part of the same family as the extant white-tailed deer and the mule deer, and may have resembled its relatives in life, and even coexisted with them wherever their ranges overlapped.
Biology[]
The deer was significantly larger than its living relatives. It was slightly bigger than the white-tailed deer. It was favored prey for dire wolves, American lions, cougars, grizzly bears, saber-toothed cats, jaguars, gray wolves & short-faced bears.
Range[]
The animal's range ranged across the Rocky Mountains, in several states, from north from Idaho to as far south as California.
