Dinopedia

Amanasaurus (meaning rain lizard) is an extinct genus of silesaurid that lived during the Late Triassic in Brazil. The type and only species in the genus is Amanasaurus nesbitti.

DIscovery and Naming[]

The holotype (CAPPA/USFM 0374) was discovered in the Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone of Santa Maria Formation. In 2023, Müller & Garcia announced it as a new genus and species of silesaurid. However, the publication did not fit the requirements of the ICZN, so they published a correction in 2024, finalizing the name. The generic name combines Tupi word Amana (meaning rain) and saurus (meaning lizard), while the specific name is named after American paleontologist Sterling J.Nesbitt.

Description[]

It consists of the right femur. A distal left femur (CAPPA/USFM 0375) was also referred to Amanasaurus. It differs from other silesaurids such as the posteromedial tuber of the femoral head reduced to none and the ventral margin of the anteromedial tuber exceeding the margin of the femoral head.

Classification[]

It is classified as a member of silesaurid. Its sister taxons are Ignotosaurus and Silesaurus.
