Akkedops (meaning lizard appearance) is an extinct genus of early neodiapsid reptile that lived in Late Permian in South Africa. The type species is Akkedops bremneri.
Discovery and Naming[]
The holotype (SAM-PK-K6205) was discovered by D.T. Bremmer in 1980s in the outcrops of Karoo supergroup in South Africa. It was not described until 2025, when Mooney, Scott and Reisz described it as a new genus. the generic name combines The Afrikaan word akkedis, meaning lizard, and opsis, meaning appearance. the specific name is named after D.T. Bremmer.
Description[]
It is from a nearly complete skull. Mooney, Scott & Reisz also referred two other specimens to Akkedops based on similarities in their anatomy and discovery locality, such as the specimen BP/1/2614. The specimen is somewhat distorted and crushed.
