Abelisaurus comahuensis is a genus of Abelisaurid theropod from the late Cretaceous of Argentina from 70 to 66 million years ago. It measured about 7 to 9 meters (about 25 to 30 feet) in length, and is known from only one partial skull.

Discovery[]

Abelisaurus was discovered from a skull in the region of Patagonia within Argentina, discovered in late cretaceous strata. The genus and species (Abelisaurus comahuensis) were named by Argentine paleontologists José Bonaparte and Fernando Emilio Novas in 1985.

Description[]

Abelisaurus is only known from a single skull, thus determining its actual appearance is based mostly on other Abelisaurids. Based on its skull, it is presumed its body measured 32 feet and weighed 3 tons. Some researchers have disputed this and estimated its weight and size as 1 ton and 23 feet.
