Ok so, the history of dinosaur movies is fairly well documented. But whats not is the history of dinosaur fights in cinema, so lets lay down the ground rules.
Both participants have to be dinosaurs, pterosaurs and other prehistoric animals can join in, as can humans but dinoaurs
Their needs to be at least one clear blow by both fighters or members of their team, the tyrannosaurus running up to a triceratops only to get gored and run off in the lost world doesn't count.
It needs to be a feature film released in cinemas, short films and direct to dvd or television movies don't count.
Alright so the oldest dinosaur fight scene I can find is from disney's "Fantasia" released in 1940. featuring a battle between a stegosaurus and a tyrannosaurus, originally it was planned to be a ceratosaurus that would fight the stegosaurus since that is a fight that probably would have taken place in the jurassic. However after its appearance in the lost world and king kong, the tyrannosaurus rex was becoming incredibly popular.
Tyrannosaurus-Wins: 1 Losses: 0
Stegosaurus-Wins: 0 Losses: 1
Our next battle should be familiar to any kaiju fans, Godzilla vs Anguirus. For those that don't know, in this specific incarnation godzilla is an irradiated tyrannosaurus and anguirus an irradiated ankylosaurus. In their first fight its kind of hard to see if godzilla actually hits anguirus at any point, but their second and final battle is a lot more clear. This is noteworthy for being the only cinematic dinosaur battle in black and white, and portrayed via suitmotion.
Tyrannosaurus-Wins 2: Losses: 0
Ankylosaurus-Wins 0: Losses 1
Taking a brief break from tyrannosaurus rex we have ceratosaurus vs triceratops in the remake of one million years bc, This is a historic dinosaur battle for many reasons, for one its the first dinosaur battle in stop motion after several years of dinosaur movies in stop motion, this is the first time they actually have a proper battle. Its also the first live action battle in color. And its the first time a herbivore beat a carnivore in a battle in hollywood.
Triceratops: Wins 1: Losses 0
Ceratosaurus: Wins 0: Losses 0
Next battle shows two newcomers, allosaurus and styracosaurus. Allosaurus was chosen as the species for gwangi in the original script, however harryhausen modelled gwangi off of a tyrannosaurus, justifying it by saying they were both "king of their eras". Styracosaurus wasn't as lucky as its cousin triceratops as gwangi came out on top.
Allosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Styracosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Our next fight brings us back to the godzilla franchise, where our favorite radioactive t.rex fights off the fictional dinosaur species "titanosaurus" not to be confused with the actual family of dinosaurs. In the end thanks to the combined efforts of titanosaurus and mechagodzilla, the G-Man is defeated. Marking the first ever defeat of a tyrannosaurus in battle, in the history of cinema.
Titanosaurus (kaiju): Wins 1: Losses: 0
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 3: Losses: 1
Obviously godzilla never stays down for long, and in his solo battle with titanosaurus, He defeated the mind controlled monster.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 4: Losses 1
Titanosaurus: Wins 4: Losses 1
Returning to a familar match-up, t.rex and stegosaurus fight again. With a simular end to the fight, honestly in fantasia the stegosaurus got a good few hits in. In this battle the t.rex is far more brutal barely letting the stegosaurus getting a clear hit in.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 5: Losses 1
Stegosaurus: Wins 0: Losses 2
This next battle should hit hard if you watched the entire movie littlefoot's mother an apatosaurus fights the vicious sharptooth, a tyrannosaurus. The outcome of this battle is debatable, whilst littlefoot's mother succesfully knocked the sharptooth off of the cliff, she later succumbed to the injuries of the fight and died, whilst the sharptooth survived the fight. Ultimately I decided it was a tie.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 5: Losses 1: Ties: 1
Apatosaurus: Wins 0: Losses 0: Ties 1
Littlefoot would eventually get revenge for his mother when he and the other dinosaurs would work together to kill the sharptooth. The first time stegosaurus actually wins against tyrannosaurus and the first time t.rex and triceratops fight. Also the only time a hadrosaur participates in a battle.
Apatosaurus: Wins 1 Losses: 0: Ties: 1
Triceratops: Wins 2: Losses: 0
Saurolophus: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Stegosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 2
Pteranodon: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 5: Losses: 2
Now an iconic battle, t.rex vs velociraptor at the end of jurassic park. The first dinosaur battle to be portrayed with CGI. The first time the t.rex has fought another carnivore. This movie continues the t,rex's winning streak.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 6: Losses: 0: Ties 1
Velociraptor: Wins 0: Losses 1
Whilst their were several dinosaur movies released most of them only focused on a few indiividual animals. It wasn't until jurassic park's sequel we would get a proper battle between two velociraptors. (The battle itself begins at 5:00). This is the first time a dinosaur has fought a member of its own species.
Velociraptor: Wins: 0: Losses: 1: Ties 1
The next few battle's are from disney's dinosaur. Specifically a fight between aladar and kron over leadership of the herd, this is not only the first CGI herbivore battle but the first dinosaur battle where both species have speaking roles.
Iguanodon: Wins: 0: Loses: 0: Ties: 1
The next battle is also from disney's dinosaur, the first movie to feature two differnet dinosaur battles in the same movie. The battle is between a carnotaurus and some iguanodon kron, neera and aladar. In the end the trio proves triumphant when they push the carnotaurus off of a cliff to its death, with kron unfortunately being killed as well.
Iguanodon Wins 1: Losses: 0: Ties: 1
And now for one of the most infamous dinosaur fight scenes, t.rex vs spinosaurus from jurassic park 3. The first time tyrannosaurus has lost a one-on-one fight in cinema, this battle was the first megatheropod battle in the jurassic park franchise
Spinosaurus: Wins: 1: Losses: 0
Tyrannoaurus: Wins: 6: Losses: 3: Ties: 1
The next battle is mostly focused on a stampede but does contain moments of fighting. Its a venatosaurus vs brontosaurus in king kong. This scene doesn't end with a definitive winner. the brontos just sort of crash to the ground as the venatos feast on the dead. Still its the first fight with an entirely fictional dinosaur for better or worse.
Venatosaurus: 0 wins: 0 loses: 1 tie
Brontosaurus: 0 wins: 0 loses: 1 tie
Next up, dinosaur anime! You are umasou is a lovely film which is pretty underatted within the paleocommunity. I couldn't find the clips of the fights on youtube, but I did find the full movie online. It has the honor of being the first dinosaur film with multiple fight scenes. The first true battle is between a pack of tyrannosaurus and an injured triceratops at 14:39 to 15:33. The next fight is between two juvenile tyrannosaurs heart and gonza, from 20:19 to 21: 25. This is the first fight scene in cinema between two dinosaurs who are explicitly not fully grown. Heart takes on gonza again, this time to protect his ankylosaurus son umasou. The fight begins at 50:05 and ends at 52: 13. The final battle between heart and baku, a giant even among tyrannosaurus. Lasts from 73:28 to 82: 22. Since all three battles are between tyrannosaurus with no assistance from other dinosaurs they all are ties.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins: 7: Losses 3: Ties: 4
Triceratops: Wins 2: Losses: 1
Our next movie might confuse some people, released in 2012 "Dinotasia" released featuring several segments of dinosaur clips from the documentaries monsters resurected and dinosaur revolution. For our first fight, velociraptor continues its losing streak this time against its archnemesis protoceratops.
Velociraptor: Wins: 0: Losses: 2: Ties: 1
Protoceratops: Wins 1: Losses: 0
The film unsurprisingly to anyone who has seen dinosaur revolution, has more than one battle. The next one is between the t.rex's jack palance and stumpy who gets his namesake injury. The early 2010's really were obsessed with tyrannosaurs fighting each other huh?
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 7: Losses 3: Ties 5
Our next fight is also in dinotasia, stumpy and his mate tinkerbell getting their revenge on jack for driving them out of their territory. The way they kill jack as well is really brutal and creative
Tyrannosaurus: Wins: 7: Losses 3: Ties: 6
And now for a genuine win for tyrannosaurus rex, one eye the tyrannosaurus kills speckles's mother in combat. In a manor that is...simular to the lion king to say the least.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 8: Losses: 3: Ties: 6
Tarbosaurus: Wins 0: Losses: 1
And now another fight from speckles the tarbosaurus, this time with the namesake speckles finally fending off one eye to stop him from forcefully mating with blue eyes.
Tarbosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 1
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 8: Losses 4: Ties: 6
Speckles would finally come up with a fight scene different than just t.rex vs tarbosaurus. With a velociraptor pack attacking the tarbosaurus's mate blue eyes. Before the raptors get so bad that the tarbosaurus family has no choice but to flee. I won't count this as a win from the raptors since speckle's suceeds in killing tons of them. But they also suceed in driving him off.
Tarbosaurus: Wins 2: Losses: 1
Velociraptor: Wins 0: Losses: 2: Ties: 2
The final battle of dino king, between one eyes and speckles. With some tylosaurus coming in at the end. With one eye straight up trying to (and partially suceeding) kill speckle's kids.
Tarbosaurus: Wins 2: Losses 1
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 8: Losses 5: ties: 6
Finally moving on from speckles the tarbosaurus, we have bulldust the pachyrhinosaurus and gorgon the gorgosaurus, the leader of their respective herds and packs. Its also the first fight scene thats takes place within a natural disaster.
Gorgosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Pachyrhinosaurus: Wins 0: Losses 1
The walking with dinosaurs movie also gave us a fight between the two pachyrhinosaurus brothers scowler and patchi. Whilst the other duels were a lot less clear as to what actually counted as a hit from either side this is much more blatant. Its the first ceratopsian duel to be portrayed in a movie. Its also a very emotional battle in the cretaceous cut.
Pachyrhinosaurus: Wins: 0: Losses: 1: Ties: 1
The final battle of walking with dinosaurs is between the pachryhinosaurus herd and gorgosaurus pack. With patchi avenging the death of his father bulldust. Its also the first time in 13 years that a herbivore beat a carnivore in dinosaur cinema.
Pachyrhinosaurus: Wins 1: Losses 1: Ties: 1
Gorgosaurus: Wins: 1: Losses: 1
After years of hiatus the jurassic park franchise returned, to give us the first herbivore carnivore battle in the jurassic park franchise. A scene where the indominus rex fights an ankylosaurus as zach and gray are caught in their way. Its also the first time ankylosaurus has had a proper battle with a theropod since godzilla raids again, where the ankylosaurus simularly is killed by its carnivorous attacker, perhaps a homage on the part of colin trevorrow to dinosaur cinema before.
Indominus Rex: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Ankylosauurs: Wins 0: Losses: 2
Now for my personal favorite fight scene in a dinosaur movie, the final battle of jurassic world. The pack of velociraptor's betray the indominus rex in favor of their former alpha owen grady, however the indominus proves to strong. Killing all but one of the raptors, however the tide of the battle gradually turns as rexy the tyrannosaurus is introduced and blue and rexy need to work together. Fun fact the entire battle from the shot where blue is reintroduced is done in one continous take. This is also the first time a velociraptor has ever won a battle in cinema, and a mosasaurus has been involved in a dinosaur fight.
Velociraptor: Wins 1: Losses: 2: Ties: 2
Tyrannosaurus: Wins: 9: Losses: 5: Ties 6
2015 was a big year for dinosaur cinema, since the same year as jurassic park's return. It saw the release of pixar's the good dinosaur, this scene in particular features a stampede where some feathered velociraptors cause a stampede of "Longhorns" and tyrannosaurus trio butch, ramsay and nash as well as the apatosaurus arlo and his neandrethal pet. Need to fend them off, the fight ends with yet another loss for velociraptor.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 10: Losses 5: ties: 6
Apatosaurus: Wins 2: Losses 0: Ties 6
Velociraptor: Wins: 1: Losses 3: Ties: 2
Speckles the tarbosaurus received a sequel in 2017, in the form of "Dino King: Journey To Fire Mountain". The first fight scene in the movie is between the tarbosaurus duo cy and fang. As well as the saichania sy, who help bring a mamenchisaurus egg back to its mother from some theiving carnotaurus.
Tarbosaurus: Wins 3: Losses: 1
Saichania: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Carnotaurus: Wins 0: Losses 2
The last fight scene so far in the speckle's the tarbosaurus franchise is between the carnotaurus blade and the therizinosaurus slash and some velociraptors. With junior and blue some tarbosaurus coming in to help. its the first time a dinosaur has died during a fight scene.
Carnotaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 2
Tarbosaurus: Wins 4: Losses: 1
Early man opens with a fight between a ceratosaurus and triceratops as an homage to one million years BC. The fight ends with an asteroid wiping both parties out.
Triceratops: Wins 2: Losses: 1: Ties: 1
Ceratosaurus: Wins 0: Losses 1: Ties 1
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom offered a fight between a pachyrhinosaurus and carnotaurus. Ultimately the pachyrhinosaurus lives to fight another day beating the carnotaurus.
Pachyrhinosaurus: Wins 2: Losses: 1: Ties 1
Carnotaurus: Wins 0: Losses: 3
Finally velociraptor gets a solo win in the final battle of jurassic world fallen kingdom, where the always brave blue manages to fight the indoraptor in lockwood manor ending with the beast's imaplement.
Velociraptor: Wins: 2: Losses 3: Ties: 1
Indoraptor: Wins 0: Losses: 1
Our next selection also might confuse some people, beleive it or not the first few episodes of primal were stiched together into a movie so that it may have been nominated for best animated feature. The scene features neandrethal spear and tyrannosaurus fang working together for the first time to fend off a pack of much larger tyrannosaurs.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins: 10: Losses: 5: Ties: 7
As to be expected by any fan of primal, the show's brutal violence naturally meant that their was one more fight scene to be had. The raptor chase, whilst the raptors do corner spear and fang im not counting it since they cleared the floor with them earlier in the scene. But it ends with no real winner, so its a tie.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 10: Losses 5: Ties 8
The final installment in the jurassic world trilogy and the most recent dinosaur movie to feature fights, Jurassic World: Dominion features a scene where the giganotosaurus fights rexy in the forest. Driving her off from his territory and stealing her food. Its the first fight in the jurassic park films which doesn't end with the death of any dinosaur invovled.
Giganotosaurus: Wins 1: Loses: 0
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 10: Loses: 6: Ties: 8
And now for the final battle in dinosaur cinema as of 2023, the final showdown between the t.rex and giganotosaurus with the therizinosaurus coming in to help. Not only is this the final showdown of the jurassic park franchise and also the first time a feathered dinosaur actually got a kill albeit a shared one. I also think its poetic that the first and last battle so far features a t.rex roaring over the body of its nemesis as rain pours and lightning crackles.
Tyrannosaurus: Wins 11: Losses: 6 Ties: 8
Therizinosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 0
Giganotosaurus: Wins 1: Losses: 1
And those are all the fight scenes in dinosaur cinema I can find, let me know if theirs any I missed and tell me what your favorite is.
