Everyone else is doing it, and my list actually has changed since the last time I did one of these. So why not I guess. It was Megalosaurus's 200th birthday, and I did start this list, but had to sleep, so here it is!
Utahraptor/Cryolophosaurus
Utahraptor’s size is a primary reason for making the top ten. That and the sheer size of the toe claw. As for Cryo, the forward-facing crest is a very unique feature. Also it lived on Antarctica, so that’s something.
Vallibonavenatrix
A “huntress” instead of a “hunter”, which is pretty rare. Besides the name and a slightly smaller size, there’s not a lot about this guy that I find different from Baryonyx.
Spinosaurus
The “spined lizard” itself. This fella is just behind Suchomimus because the latter is less well known, otherwise easily fits on the list. The sail, the tail, the head, the arms; all valid reasons to like such a unique theropod. Though debate surrounds there being a second species (maroccanus), it can be said with certainty that Spinosaurus was one of the most uniquely adapted megatheropods to have existed. Also I have two of its teeth so there’s that.
Suchomimus
Third spinosaur in a row! Ironically the “crocodile mimic” is less of a crocodile mimic than the spined lizard and heavy claw. That aside, or because of that, Suchomimus is a really cool theropod. Also, being bumped into megatheropod territory last year was neat. The short sail is a unique feature, considering I don’t know any spinosaurs with a sail of similar size; it’s always huge or nothing.
Therizinosaurus
Giant claws on an herbivorous theropod. I don’t think I have to elaborate much more.
Huayangosaurus
A smaller, cooler stegosaur. The small plates, large shoulder spikes, and JWE colors put it in this position in my list. Also, something about its name just looks appealing.
Acrocanthosaurus/Thanatotheristes
Acrocanthosaurus is primarily in fourth because of its unique appearance (2-foot ridge). A coloring Billings Productions made is also a big contributor to its placement. Thanatotheristes didn’t get a lot of attention from me until around last year. The name alone is a major factor that got it where it is now.
Giganotosaurus
It's big. It’s got a cool name. And it was pretty little known (among the public) until Dominion. Probably still is. But anyway, I like Giga more than other megatheropods (aside from Siats) because of its size and imposing appearance. Yeah, T. rex and Carchar give off the same vibe, but they’re better known.
Pyroraptor
Its name means “Fire thief”. Does it need to be explained more? Besides that it's underrated, barely known, and cooler than Velociraptor.
Stegosaurus/Siats
Stegosaurus is a fan favorite. I have loved it since the good old days of Dinosaur Train and OG Dino Dan. I’ve never known exactly why, but I’m assuming it has to do with the plates and spikes. As for Siats, I didn’t think much of it after I first saw it at Jurassic Quest back in 2020 until Mattel made it. That and its name are what really pushed it up to favorite theropod and tied for favorite dinosaur.
Honorable mentions:
Megalosaurus
First dinosaur named! At best, it fits somewhere within my top 20 favorites, but I don’t know where.
Barosaurus
A sauropod! Finally! Among the few herbivores in my list. I’ve heard about this one for a long while, but never really thought much of it. Now I like it a lot (for a sauropod) and think it deserves much more attention.
Afrovenator/Deltadromeus
The “African hunter” and “delta sprinter”. Not much to say with these guys besides how cool they are. Especially Delta, considering the issues with its head and classification.
Bistahieversor
Cool tyrannosaur, probably my second favorite, and cool name. Mattel’s design is a little questionable but the colors go hard. This guy most certainly gave me more pronunciation issues than Herrerasaurus did back in 2018.
Tyrannosaurus
While I certainly have other preferences, I don’t dislike T. rex enough to not have it as an honorable mention. It’s easily the largest theropod, had amazing sight, smell, and hearing, and is probably the best known dinosaur. A lot of the reasons it is popular, however, are reasons I have other favorites for large theropods.
