Meganeura

Hello, welcome back to me looking at the creatures of Dino Dan, where we’ve reached the end of the road, as I complete the remaining creatures from Dino Dana. To summarize, I look at the design of each creature, along with any oother info shown, mentioned or implied and look at how accurate or inaccurate it is, followed by personal opinion based notes in the design itself.

Titanis is kinda cool, I like the head shape, the feather crest and the colors are nice (though yellow/pink may not be best combo). With that said, I wish the legs were bigger and the arms highlight the worst of this series’s bizarre avoidance of proper wings

I LOVE this design so much! Gigantoraptor is one of my favorite dinosaurs and this design does the giant chicken justice. The dull red and white are such a great color scheme and all my favorite features like the neck, legs and size are still intact. And most importantly FINALLY A DESIGN WITH WINGS!!! I’m glad they picked this creature out of all to give the wings (even if that sucks for the rest). One of my favorite designs of this entire series probably. Too bad it only appears twice

Like Hippodraco, Europa is another wild-card inclusion, though not as exciting for me. The colors are still nice I suppose. Can’t really say much for or against it, but it’s inclusion is neat I guess.

Man, this Archaeopteryx is just a mess. It wasn’t until I heavily analyzed the design, but even when I first said eyes on this thing, I knew something was wrong. The ostrich head looks lame, the chest and stomach proportions are unfit for a bird, the posture is weird too and for the love of Raptor Jesus WHY does this BIRD have ARMS instead of WINGS!?!? It’s a shame, since the coloration actually looks pretty cool.

Also, I find it kinda dumb how there’s an entire episode dedicated to Dana struggling to figure if this creature is a dinosaur or a pterosaur, even though any paleo-fan/nerd, fresh out the metaphorical eggshell could tell that’s an Archaeopteryx on first try.

Livyatan is just fine, I think blue and white are a decent mix. It’s a big predatory whale, that’s kinda cool on its own. But I do really wish we saw a curved jaw design with a more unique head shape and the small teeth size is pretty jarring. The wrinkles too bring down the design a bit.

Also, I don’t care if it’s dumb, watching it and a submarine breach together was awesome.

Meganeura (and Arthorpleura) are weird in that I for some reason get excited about what’s just an upscaled arthropod (tho at least Arthro I prefer with the armored look). Meganeura is just a big dragonfly and that’s enough for me, somehow makes it a favorite for me and this design looks cool to me.

(Tho maybe that’s me giving into some of my edgelord tendencies, since arthropods are the definitive edgiest animals and better edgier when giant).

Also, I feel so bad for it in its 2nd appearance, where it only exists to get dunked on and eaten by various paraves.

Bronto is another fine one, but man that face is goofy as hell. Life on Our Planet Megacerops is a Chad, this guy is straight virgin material by comparison. Also, wish we saw more of it regardless.

Eoraptor as the 1st (proper) Triassic animal is decent. The vivid green colors really carry the design and it’s prolly the least obvious the recolors. If this were the only recollection, I’d be fine.

I honestly don’t care about ProCompy since it’s superficially the same thing to me regardless of design. Tho they could have tried just a little bit harder than Compy but duller and naked.

Honestly, do you care about these 2 sauropods? Are you a genuine fan of Bellu or Amygdala and upset they’re just recolors? Well I’m not and let’s not kid ourselves, neither are you. These 2 could have been 100% ace in the hole accurate design and I still wouldn’t care at all. Just another 2 random dinosaurs that blend into the crowd (my personal 2nd least favorite type of extinct animal).

Procerato and Eustrepto are such cool and unique creatures, so them being s***y recolors doesn’t need to be explained as to why that’s bad. Procerato definitely was worse off a color pattern that looks like literal ****, but Eustrepto’s colors would have actually looked pretty cool if given a proper model.

This was what I meant when I said this series treats the Triassic like s***.

Zuul is a surprising choice but a welcome one. I think the natural browny green colors looks better than Euoplo, really nice design, tho I do wish it were a bit thicker.

Gorgo has a great model, the plain brown with liver spots pattern are kinda dull and unpleasant. Gorgon from the WWD movie is always be best Gorgo.

Fun fact, the reason these 2 are as accurate as they are (I assume) is because the company who made the show, also made an animation for the Royal Ontario Museum (which was also visited in all 3 shows and the movie) to go along with the discovery and exhibit of Zuul. And since they had the Zuul and Gorgo lying about, they decided, may as well put them into the Dana Movie.

Too bad both make mere cameos, despite new additions usually getting at least one full episode about them.

Pachycephalosaurus, while an odd final species, looks really nice with the blue color and long build to it. Pachy boi looks simply majestic (say for the weird neck).

Stygi and Draco are here too and we’re totally children the whole time (even tho there’s no way it’s coloration would change that drastically IRL). If you wanna hear my thoughts about them just go read parts 1 and 3.

Also, it’s kinda sweet the Pachy trio are used to teach both dinosaur ontogeny and a family lesson about ignoring what’s different to focus on what’s in common.

Minus color, if you're interested how it looked before

First of all, I would like to say I don't know if anyone will read this. I'm only writing this to keep myself occupied, and also I hope someone will find this notebook in the event that I die out here. I have no idea how I got here, but I will retell what happened over the past day.

First of all, I am studying engineering at the Virginia Commonwealth University, although I do study paleontology and world history in my freetime. I was walking across the city of Richmond to go to a corner store to get some candy, when I tripped on something. I have no idea what it was that I tripped on, but I closed my eyes and braced myself to slam into the concrete sidewalk, but instead, I landed in cold, wet, mud. The sensation of the cold mud on my face startled me, and I quickly got up. Some of my clothes were ruined, and I quickly wiped the mud off my face.

I was very confused, though. It had not rained for days, and it was pretty sunny in Richmond (The city where VCU is located.) It was also summer, which is why I was also dumbfounded that I felt cold all over my body, not just where I had landed in the mud. I looked around my surroundings, and to my amazement, I was suddenly in a forest.

I got up, and looked around. I found that the reason that it was so cold was that where ever I was, it was in autumn.

Dull brown leaves fell from the treetops around me. At this point, I realized something was not right. I looked through my backpack, which thank god that I still had, and started walking in a general direction, while yelling, trying to see if there was anyone, which in hindsight, was a pretty bad idea.

After maybe ten minutes of walking, I came upon a cliff, which overlooked a huge valley. I mean, this valley must have been miles wide. I could not see anything from the top of the cliff, and from where I was, I saw a waterfall, so I walked towards that.

Now, when I was back in the normal world, I used to go hiking a lot, so I knew a decent amount of survival skills. I quickly made a fire next to this small river, put some sticks in, warmed myself up, safely gathered charcoal from the fire, took out a plastic water bottle I had in my backpack, cut it open, and made a DIY water filter with rocks, and sand from the stream, as well as the charcoal I had gathered. I also tore a bit of a rag off that was in my backpack to help make this water filter.

Now that I had a fire going, and a source of clean water, I needed shelter and food. I ventured into the forest again, making sure not to go to far away from the fire. I gathered a pretty big rock, I might have been able to kill an animal with it. I didn't know long I would be out here, and I was pretty scared and desperate to do whatever I could.

That's when I heard a rustling coming from a tree. I looked at it, and my eyes didn't really make sense of what it was. At first I thought it was a tree branch, but the branches were.. clear? Then, the thing moved, and when it did, I realized what it was.

The thing was brown, it had six legs, and what I thought were tree branches were actually massive wings. It was an absolutely gargantuan dragonfly. It scared the absolute shit out of me, I threw the rock, hitting it right on it's thorax. It fell to the ground, it was shaking or seizing, I don't know. I love bugs, but something about their movements creeps me out, and when the bug is way larger than it was supposed to be, I was on the verge of a panic attack. I bashed the rock against it until it stopped moving.

At first I was relieved that it was dead, but then I felt immense guilt. I know, it sounds stupid, but I felt extremely guilty that I had basically just come across this creature, scared it half to death, then thrown a rock at it, and then beat it to death with said rock. I eventually stopped sulking next to the dragonflies corpse, and then realized, holy shit, maybe a dragonfly the size of my arm ISNT normal?

Then I remembered that one episode of Walking With Monsters, about the Carboniferous era, and the Meganura. But it couldnt be that, right? They went extinct hundreds of millions of years ago.

I eventually found a berry bush, which I gathered food off of and brought it back to my temporary camp. I gathered together rudementary leaf hut around the fire, and decided to sleep a bit.

When I woke up, it was still day, but it was around sunset. I looked around my campsite, and that's when I saw something. I thought it was a deer for a second, but then I saw it was standing on two legs, with a long tail, and two shorter arms. It was drinking from the river. I couldnt believe what I was seeing, it was actually a dinosaur. It was a dryosaurus, maybe a camptosaurus, I couldnt tell from where I was, but I could tell it was real. I walked towards it, and it ran away.

I ran over to where it was, and I attempted to run after it to see it again, and while I was, I came across something that caught my attention. It was a small brick wall, maybe two feet high. I inspected it, it was either incomplete or broken, I couldnt tell. I knew what it meant though. It meant humans were here, or had been here.

I'm back at my shelter now, writing all of this. The suns going down now, and i'm going to sleep here. I'll be writing these once every day to keep myself occupied. Goodnight to myself, I guess.

The cool Malta air ripples my face, in the summer this place is like a dessert but in the winter it has a much more sutible climate. There's only one reason anyone comes here these days, dinosaurs.

warm blooded agile reptiles that dominated Earth for 180 million years until an asteroid struck and left only the theropod birds.

At least that's how it was until Ingen brought them back for a zoo on Isla Nublar. You already should know how well that went.

Then they built another one that managed to run for ten years until a mutant dinosaur broke out and destroyed it all.

And then they were rescued from Isla Nublar just before a V9 volcanic eruption and were brought to the mainland where they were sold to a bunch of billionaires who were all killed by another mutant dinosaur.

In the process they were all released into our world. They then quickly spread across North America and eventually the world. So what did we do?

We fought them, we protected them, we let them romp around. But some of us sold them. That's why I'm here, to sell them. To join the prehistoric market ran by the mysterious man Duckhunt (no one knows why he calls himself that) all because I lost my job for protecting a baby Psita 1 (a medium sized spinosauridae) who was going to be killed because there trying to reduce the population of those things. I probably was never going to get a new job, always have problems working in the normal jobs (you should have seen me in my past 5 jobs)

"Alright Johnson, get on the helicopter" said the man taking me to the market. I stepped in the small vehicle. The market is only accessible by aircraft because the peninsula its on has very bumpy terrain around it and very steep cliffs by the ocean. "Alright, what you're going to see here is top secret, so if you decide to rat us out we might as well kill you" sai the man. "What" I replied. "Ah I'm just messing with you" he said. As we approached the market, I was shocked by what I saw, there was a large heard of iguanodons in one paddock and a pack of Allosauruses*. There appeared to be a couple dozen people at the market, occasionally someone would bye something and they would send a car in to sedate the dinosaur and transport it away.

In one aviary I could see a swarm of what looked like dragon flies. "Are those meganuera" I asked. "Yep" the man replied "with all the new genetic research we can get dna from protiens, we're no longer limited to the time mosquitos lived, it's beautiful, to bad there's all the conspiracies". "What conspiracies" I asked "never mind" he said, "I'll tell you when we land"

Here in the carboniferous period the longest period of the paleozoic, about 358.9-298 million years ago are vast swamps covering the landscape

The oxygen here is much higher about 35% of the atmosphere compared to 21% today. thanks to the growth of trees removing amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

But...this could also mean that insects and other arthropods got bigger.......

about 350-320 million years ago is when delitzschala bitterfeldensis appeared as the first flying species to ever lived...

This is where the evolution of flight begins. woth a wingspan of just 2½ cm in a irregular pattern of coloured spots on his wings. it is that delitzschala is a camoflauged insect. as it clearly matches it's surrounding dull greenery in the swamps. as evolution goes on, other insect species later evolved flight. then 215 mya. in the mesozoic this ability was later achived by pterosaurus, then birds are next to gain the ability to fly, then in the cenozoic which is the era we still live in today, bats also evolved flight since 50 million years ago as a result of convergent evolution.

But this series mainly focuses on the paleozoic. lets just move on!

Now, arthropods are the dominant species of this time period, they are abundant.

The carboniferous also saw the emergence of the first amniotes like synapsids and reptiles.

In the depths bellow are tullimonstrum, colloquially known as tully monsters. these creatures that look like something straight out of a sci-fi series are actually soft-bodied bilaterian animals & also discovered in the mazon creek fossil beds of central illinois,usa by francis tully in 1955

it's claw or jaw for snatching onto prey as might be a carnivore. it can reach length up to 15 inches long which isn't that big if you think about it.

This fish had more curved but not round blades or tooth whorls unlike helicoprion who lived later at the permian. and is about 6.7 meters in length and weighted 2 tons. he's a tough predatory fish with serrated teeth that have a long v-shape that stacked up on eachother akin to roof tiling.

This is megarachne, now if you haved watched the original bbc documentary: WWM episode 2 reptiles beginnings, you might think it's a giant spider but it's actually a eurypterid A.K.A sea scoripon.

Thats because megarachne was "misidenified" and it's thought to be a large spider untill further studies...

she's a 54 cm long eurypterid, discovered in argentina. but unlike most sea scorpions who live in the ocean,megarachne perferred to live in freshwater enviorments.

She has blade-like structures on her appendages to engage in feeding method known as sweep-feeding, ranking though the solf-bodied sediments of aquatic enviorment with her frontal appendages to capture and feed on small invertabtates, so she's a carnivore. but when comes face-to-face with another carnivore

Ctenacanthus major is a large shark from the 2 americas/americanos continents.

But theres not much about him so he isn't a well-known species.

Early Reptiles & synapsids thrived in the vast swampy coal forest.

A petrolacosaurus was crawling entering the territory of a territory of a ophiacodon.

Ophiacodon weight 230 kg and reach lengths to about 3 meters.

This one isn't happy that a creature stumpled onto it's territory, it's name means:"snake teeth". petrolacosaurus makes a run for it managed to run away from this carnivorous synapsid.

In whats now usa, some proterogyrinus are thriving. they are embolemeri tetrapods from the mid-carboniferous.

The Arthropleura came into the lake without knowing. he's related to modern millipedes, about as long as a car. his jaws could deliver a strong & nasty bite don't worry. arthropleura is a herbivore meaning that he eats plants

The minor extinction event is slowly approaching. concentration of carbon dioxide crashed in the atmosphere in one of all time global lows. the remaining swamps & forest are unable to survive this great danger and finally wiped out. fire is naturally ignited causing a "natural" forest fire. the climate becomes cooler & drier. dwarfism is caused, shortly after, animals and plants that adapted to these forest are unable to keep up with the rapid changes and then gone extinct.while others survived

So now. we entered the permian period...

(I made this because I wanted to make it clear that P.P is not just a story, but also a worldbuilding project of mine. I think it's good to clarify the park doesn't JUST have prehistoric creatures Aswell.)

Welcome to the green hotel! Owned by Mariott and Located in the Antarctica sector of the park, we have a very of accommodations to cater to your every need, including:

• A free breakfast cafe open from 6 to 10 AM

• Up to 700 rooms for you to stay in.

• A pool and hot tub closed only from 9PM to 2AM

• A spa opened night long.

• A fitness center for you to exercise in, open from 7AM to 5PM

The first of our few attractions is our greenhouses. Here, you can marvel at flora from a time long past. In one of our greenhouses, we advise guests afraid of creepy-crawlies to stick away from here, as this where the parks Meganeura and Arthropleura are kept! The Meganeura, despite its large size and carnivorous diet, is quite docile, and might even lay on your arm if you stick it out! Arthropleura are herbivores, but can still spray cyanide at foe's if threatened, so be gentle around them.

Second up is our view of the Cryolophosaurus enclosure, nothing but plain beauty here folks!

And finally, our most famous attraction, exclusive to the hotel, the Llanocetus enclosure! We have 12 Llanocetus here at P.P, all with a calm, playful temperament. The Llanocetus are renowned for their beautiful and complex songs, which are proven to improve sleep (Unlike the Basilosaurus and the Livyatan, who's songs apparently cause nightmares). You may even see them hunting fish and using a primitive form of the bubble net tactic!

(We do not host shows with the Llanocetus, as to avoid following in the footsteps of a certain other amusement park that mistreated their modern-day cetaceans, you know who.)

So everyone asks, "CoUlD SPiNo bEAT T.rEX?!?!?!?" but no one ever asks how they would do if they worked together. I have decided to create a little battle royal royal with one prehistoric animal from each major class. These creatures are: Paracetherium for mammals, Purrusaurus for reptiles, Argentavis for birds, Prionosuchus for amphibians, Edustus for fish, and 5 meganura for arthropods.

The battlefield is simple, two temperate forests, one closely packed, the other quite open. These forests are separated by a river, where Edustus while lurk.

So I guess its up to you to decide if they can beat spino and rex. (:
