The Paleoverse includes my cryptid stories along with my Sauria Island stories. It mainly focuses on prehistoric animals in modern day. If you're wondering why they're still alive, basically, there's this giant crystal on Sauria Island that can create a barrier to shield the island which is why there are still dinosaurs on it. But there are also prehistoric mammals like Smilodon on the island who arrived there via land bridges.
Now, even though I have explored aquatics in this universe, I only ever tackled freshwater stories. Nessie's Loch, Champ's Lake, and Crown of Teeth all take place in lakes, but then I thought, what would happen if I were to focus on a story set in the ocean?
Now, I already used quite a few popular aquatic reptiles for my cryptid stories so it would be hard making a story about them again since it would essentially be the same, just out at sea and not in a lake. But what if I didn't focus on them?
What if I focused on an animal that I really like, but I haven't introduced into the Paleoverse?
Otodus Megalodon, or simply Megalodon, is a gargantuan shark who would've never fit into this universe because the stories are mainly focused around either the inhabitants of Sauria Island, or a team of people trying to uncover the truth about a lake cryptid.
But let's just say, what if, in the vastness of the potential Multiverse, a version of me somewhere out there decided not to focus on lake cryptids, and instead, made a series connected to Sauria Island but is set in the ocean?
Now, as I've said, Megalodon is massive, which would mean if it were to roam around in modern day, it would certainly devastate almost every ecosystem it comes across, and with the Paleoverse featuring evolved versions of prehistoric animals, you can bet that Megalodon would've taken the same route and would have evolved to surpass it's current state.
And here is what I think a Meg would look like in my universe.
At 80 feet long, 30 feet tall, and weighing in at 90 tons, this modern Megalodon is somehow even more formidable than it's Cenezoic counterpart.
The design features a bulky head, spikes on the body, spines on the front of the dorsal and pectoral fins, and while it doesn't have color here, it's top half is a dark, navy blue, the middle half is tinted in a faded red, and as usual with sharks, it has a white underbelly.
It's species name, Megalodon Fludomitor translates to "Big Tooth Wave Tamer". Which refers to how dominant this beast is in its element. It's bite force is so devastating, it can crunch through metal. Like many sharks, it also has a common name, Megatooth Shark.
The specific individual in this drawing is an adult male. Researchers who have been observing him have given him the name of "Forneus". He is extremely aggressive, territorial, and powerful. And unlike other sharks, he does attack humans on purpose. Specifically, he attacks cruise ships because in his mind, he sees those ships as rival predators because he only ever sees them from the bottom. His bite is so powerful, he can rip the underside of the ships apart in a matter of minutes.
Forneus is most definitely a force to be reckoned with. Any hunter who tries to kill him for profit end up being hunted themselves. His thick hide allows him to endure many injuries that would otherwise kill other sharks and despite his size, he's abnormally fast.
As far as researchers know, he is not the only one of his kind. A 35 foot long female was seen off the coast of Brazil which means that perhaps these sharks are breeding because that female is a younger specimen.
It's been very difficult when it comes to researching anything about Forneus because of his aggressive nature. He kills anyone who tries to tag him and he doesn't care if it's just a small boat, he will kill anything that he deems as a threat. In fact, at one point, he was attacked by a pod of orcas. At first, he ignored them, that was, until they foolishly attacked him thinking they could wear him down. This angered him so he devoured the whole pod with one chomp.
It's unknown why he acts like this. Really, he shouldn't because of how big he is. He should be ignoring most of the things he sees as threats but for some reason, he doesn't. But the truth researchers don't know is that this shark, while he thinks that ships are living beings, is more intelligent than he seems at first, because he actually holds a grudge against humanity.
When he was younger, he was mistaken for a great white. But because of him being slightly bigger, hunters wanted to hunt him down badly due to them thinking they'd get a substantial reward if they hunt such a large shark down. This led to many humans attempting to kill Forneus, and after a while, he started fighting back by ramming their boats and pulling them into the water.
Now that he has grown significantly, he's taking his anger out on every human because of the trauma he faced when he was younger. Another thing to note about Megalodon Fludomitor is that it can dive to an extremely deep depth. Thanks to it's hide being very dense, it can withstand extreme water pressure, to the point where Forneus even went as far as hunting squids in the depths. But there was one event where a sperm whale got in the way, he killed the whale immediately after.
This shark also has a tendency of breaching the water. He can't exactly jump due to his size but he is known for making small leaps out of the water when ambushing prey. And he has a nasty habit of tearing off whale tails to ensure they won't escape him.
There was also a report of a dead Megalodon washing up on a Florida beach. This one was also a fully grown male, but it was torn to shreds by Forneus during a territorial dispute.
As of right now, there are measures being taken to avoid more casualties, but Forneus is not seen as a big enough threat to be killed off because at the end of the day, he's an animal, and if you get out of his way, he'll get out of yours. More and more people have been using aircraft in other to travel or ship cargo. And ships are advised to take specific routes in order to avoid an unfortunate encounter with the Mega Shark.
Forneus is almost unmatched in the ocean due to him being bigger than even the biggest modern sperm whales. He regularly slaughters whales and on one occasion, he even killed a blue whale and it's baby.
Forneus most definitely is what most people expect a Megalodon would be like, or at least, it's what people think a modern Megalodon would be like. He's extremely powerful, fierce, and can live in deep waters with little to no problems.
In terms of younger individuals, they tend to stay near shallow waters until they grow to 40 feet which is where they start heading out into the open sea. Another thing to note about the species is that they have the unsettling ability to open their jaws wider than the Cenozoic Megalodons.
And as a bonus, I drew an Odobenocetops. If you didn't know, it's a prehistoric toothed whale that has two very unique tusks. If you're wondering why one of the tusks is shorter, that's just how it is. For some odd reason, this whale has a tusk that's bigger than the other. The only reason I included it here is because it's possible young Megalodons preyed on this animal.
But as powerful and as dominant as Forneus is, I didn't say that nothing in the sea opposed him...
