The appendages are cool-lookin' gourds.
And because I love pumpkin prehistory, I'm gonna talk about it. The wild ancestors of 'pumpkins' are relatively small, green fruits called cucurbits. Giant ground sloths and such would eat them and defecate the seeds, thus dispersing them. After many megafauna went extinct during the Younger Dryas, pumpkins would have gone with them if not for a sweaty, bipedal ape cultivating them.
Also 'pumpkin' is just a term that lumps several different cultivars from various squash (Cucurbita) species.
