Birch has a fairly bulky build. He has a duck like head with a beak and a comb like crest on his head. He has two front limbs that have hooves and small claws on the sides. His front limbs are also thicker than his Cretaceous counterparts. His back legs feature three toes, he has a long tail, and he has spines running down his back. And he has multiple sideways facing stripes on his body.
Colors:
his pupils and nostrils are black, his stripes are brown, his toes, hooves, and beak are a dark grey, most of his body is a light grey, his crest is orange, he has a spot on his snout that is dark blue, his eyes are colors in a lavender color, the lower part of his legs are cream, and his spines are a dark yellow color.
Personality and History:
Birch was born in a particular part of Sauria called "Free Plains" which was a giant grassy plain filled with Hadrosaurs. He lived a fairly average life for a dinosaur. He had a close bond with his parents and usually stayed close to his herd.
Sometimes he would stray off from the herd, but if he did, the reason was usually because he wanted to find a good tree to feed on that wasn't already being munched on by other members of his herd. Either that, or he just stopped to take a drink.
Since his kind tend to migrate across the island whenever the food was low, he'd often run into many predators, but none as common as the medium sized Tyrannosaurid, Albertosaurus Frigirealis.
Some paleontologists have theorized that during the Cretaceous, Albertosaurus from time to time would hunt Edmontosaurus. And it was no more different here than it was back in prehistoric Alaska.
The reason why Albertosaurus was such a common threat was because they hunted in packs. The larger adults would often gang up in order to take down an adult Edmontosaurus. Although, they mainly targeted the weakest of the herd to avoid fighting with a healthier individual who can crush their wind pipe without much effort.
Because of this, as Birch grew older, he would develop a hatred for Albertosaurus due to how common they were. It also didn't help that the adults were nearing sizes comparable to Cretaceous Tyrannosaurus variants.
The more Birch grew, the more Albertosaurus he killed. It almost became a hobby for him. Because the attacks were so numerous, he began to take initiative for himself and take down as much of them as he could.
He enjoyed it, but not in a murderous way. He didn't take pleasure in killing them, he only enjoyed what he was doing because it was protecting his herd and to him, that's all that really mattered.
When he was 21, it would be around that time where he'd be at a suitable age to have a mate. The only problem was that getting a mate wasn't as easy. If he were a carnivore who was a solitary hunter. He'd have no issues getting a female to become his mate. But because he lived in a community, they had different methods when it came to this sort of thing.
Mating rights in a herd would often mean they would have to win fights. And in this case, Birch had to fight with the son of the herd's leader. Because Birch was quickly building a reputation for himself, the leader of the herd thought it would be fitting for him to battle his son.
Birch was dominating the fight during the first half. Due to his experience in fighting Albertosaurus, he had a good idea on how to deal with opponents. However, his opponent was quickly catching on to his strategy of keeping his enemies on the floor.
Though Birch's opponent started to understand his strategy, Birch quickly countered with pinning the leader's son to the ground and stomping his face using his front legs.
But just as Birch was about to win, the leader of the herd rammed him and pushed him away. Birch didn't even intend to kill his son, all he planned to do was tire him out until he submitted. Birch was obviously angered by this because that shouldn't be allowed. The only ones who should be fighting are the males who need to fight to get a mate. But the leader already had a mate.
Angered and frustrated, Birch roared at the leader and challenged him to a fight, but his parents tried to defuse the problem as best as they could. However, due to the older male being the leader, his word was final. After the dispute, he banished Birch and only him. In fact, the leader didn't even let his parents go with him and instead ordered some of the herd to keep them from joining their son.
It destroyed his parents to see him walk away. All of this could've been avoided had it not been for the herd's leader and his pride which outweighed everything else. He didn't want to see his son lose. If he did, that would mean that his heir would be unfit to lead once their previous leader dies. He wasn't about to let a random member of his herd take over.
As much as he hated it, Birch reluctantly left the herd. For the next four years, he traveled the island on his own trying to look for any temporary homes that he could use for a while before he needed to move. He didn't even bother joining another herd because in his mind, the incident with his former herd leader would just happen again and again. To avoid that, he avoided herds altogether.
But it wasn't as hard for him to adapt as some people may think. While he wasn't used to being on his own, he was also an adult. A very large adult who had the strength to kill a mega theropod. Because of his physical gifts, he adapted to living alone in just
two months. The only thing that could truly threaten him were a predator pack or a mega theropod, as long as he kept his distance from them, he'd be fine.
And even then, whenever he would encounter mega theropods, he'd always find a way to leave a mark on them. And in most cases, he gave them broken legs that prevented them from hunting properly. Being alone, coupled with the fear that he might never see his parents again led to Birch becoming more aggressive. He didn't care if he was a herbivore, he didn't care if people thought that he was generally seen as a completely gentle creature, if they threanted him even in the slightest, he's going to make sure they leave with fear tailing them as they do.
In those three years, nothing could scare him. Not a mega theropod, nothing. In fact, at one point he even considered going back to his herd just to kill off the herd leader. But he's not sure if his parents would approve of such a thing. Besides, he's an outsider to them now. Even if his parents still loved him, the rest of the herd would look at him and think of him as a stranger invading their community.
One day during the fourth year of his lonely trek, he felt like he finally found the perfect place to live in after searching for so long. The area was a beautiful forest which was rich in fruits and plants. Some of the people on the island referred to this as area as "Vegetarian Heaven". And the name definitely was fitting due to the area having a large assortment of herbivores and there were rarely any predator attacks. Not only that, but the herbivores in the area treated Birch like how good neighbors treated each other. They didn't try to make him go away, in fact, it was almost like they were thankful that he went there. Mainly because he had a lot of experience when it came to fighting predators.
As the months went by, Birch started to become happy again. Sure, his parents weren't around, but the community he was in was far more accepting than the one he used to live in. But just because there were rarely any predators who would venture into the area, didn't mean there were no predators who found a way inside the forest.
During May of that year, Birch was peacefully enjoying himself. Munching on fruits and anything that could get into his mouth. Though, because he was so relaxed, he never thought to look if there was anything nearby that wasn't one of his neighbors.
Out of nowhere, something chomped on his tail. He quickly shook his body around and when the attacker released his tail, he whacked the predator in the face with it. He turned to look at what had attacked him, and what he saw was a predator he thought he didn't have to deal with anymore. Ever since he was exiled from his herd, he never had to deal with this kind of predator. And yet, they still find a way to creep themselves back into his life.
It was an Albertosaurus, a teenage one. But this one was very different compared to the ones he has fought before, because this one had a rider. He has seen humans from time to time, they don't bother him so he doesn't bother them. But what he's never seen was a human who hunted with a theropod.
These two were none other than April Aragon, a girl whose plane crashed on Sauria Island and has been stuck on the island for more than a year, and her partner, Frost the Albertosaurus. April didn't know much about dinosaurs apart from what she's watched in movies and TV shows And because of that, she thought that since Birch was a Hadrosaur, he'd be easy to take down even with his size. And Frost had his own reasons as to why he attacked Birch despite his immense size. He tends to underestimate herbivores, and ever since he fought against a Torvosaurus named Quake, his confidence has been building for the last year and due to that fight, he's more willing to face off against bigger dinosaurs.
What April should have considered was that even if it wasn't Birch, her and Frost would stand no chance against his kind. Birch, though he felt happier, was still not a complete gentle giant. No, he knows too well how to take care of creatures like Frost.
Birch furiously fought with Frost, slamming him to the ground and he nearly crushed the young Albertosaurus' chest if he didn't sprint away. Birch gave chase for a while until Frost and April were out of range. Because of this experience, April started to wonder which herbivores should she and her partner target. Because if one Edmontosaurus which is usually seen as fodder, can almost kill Frost, then they should be more careful and target the smaller herbivores. They're not much to bigger predators but they're enough to sustain Frost's appetite.
Another three years pass, not much happened other than the usual. Vegetarian Heaven was quickly becoming a safehouse of sorts for a lot of herbivores. There were barely any carnivore attacks, there was food which was almost unlimited, and most importantly, the herbivores lived a peacefully and carefree life in the forest.
But something would soon befall the island. A company called Dunamis Incorporated that used to mine the island for it's resources came back. While most of the people in that company simply came to the island to find resources, find their missing men, and find out what happened to the previous CEO, there were three people who came to the island that had something else in mind.
Those three people being April's parents, Markis and Abigail Aragon, and her uncle, Ticaño Aragon. They went to the island for two reasons. One, because they work for the company, but the real reason they went to the island is because Markis is dead set on proving that his daughter isn't dead. And all the evidence points to her plane crashing on this island.
During their stay on the island, Markis, Abigail, and Ticaño sneakily separated from the rest of Dunamis in order to find any evidence that would lead them to April. At one point, they stumbled upon the crash site of the plane. It was now ruined and left to rot, covered in moss and was being guarded by small predators.
The trio would quickly begin to learn that this island is not like what they were told before they came here. The CEO, Gustin Shaw, who was the son of the previous CEO, simply said that they were going to search for resources and that it was a completely barren land. He only said that because he knew that the animals would be too scared of the mining vehicles to approach them so he neglected to mention any of the island's inhabitants.
Like April, they didn't know much about prehistoric life either, but they knew better than to mistake a dinosaur for an overgrown ostrich. Eventually, they came upon Vegetarian Heaven where they would stay for a night. Markis made sure to smash any devices that Dunamis could use to track them because they've been gone for a while. Dunamis would definitely be curious as to where they ran off to because unlike the rest of the company, they weren't interested in mining the resources. Their focus was finding April and seeing if she was alive.
When they woke up, they encountered Birch who was peacefully grazing on the trees. Abigail may have been scared of the dinosaurs before, but it's only because she only saw the predators. She almost saw Birch as a giant cow because of how gentle and calm he was.
The calmness of the scene would quickly be replaced by fear as another group of theropods decided to step into the forest. These ones were Utahraptors, some of the fastest animals on the island. And one of them in particular had a history with April. That being Cross, who lost his head feathers due to April kicking him down a waterfall. He and his pack came to this area because he thought he smelled April. But really, he picked up her parents' scent.
Though his goal was to snuff out April, because Birch was there, he immediately attacked the predators. Some of them looked like they were giving him a hard time, but there were more like bugs when they fly around humans. Sure, they're troublesome, but they're also fragile. And small, slender animals like Utahraptors weren't going to be much of a problem for someone who's known to deal with mega theropods.
But because Markis thought Birch couldn't take this on his own, he chose to get involved since this was a herbivore. Like his daughter, he thought that Birch was a harmless pacifist so he did what he thought was right and pulled out a gun and started shooting at the Raptors. He killed two of them and the rest of the pack ran away. But Cross glared at him, he may not have looked like April, but he had her scent which made him think the two were more similar than he thought. But he ended up running away.
Because Markis lended a hand to Birch, the Hadrosaur sought to pay him back for it in the only way he thought he could: he started following Markis. At first, Markis didn't realize it since he, his wife, and his brother were still focused on finding April but the more they moved away from Vegetarian Heaven, the more he started to realize that Birch wasn't leaving them alone. Because he wasn't going away, Markis started to see how Birch would react to him trying to bond with the dinosaur. It started off simple, he just kept feeding Birch. But it quickly evolved into something else.
After a few days, Markis and his group ran into a pair of Hyenadons in an area known as "Predator's Kitchen". During this fight, Markis started used his gun to try to scare the mammals away, but the Hyenadons were far more persistent than he thought. This would be the first time Markis would start to ride
Birch as he pointed at the Hyenadons, signaling the Edmontosaurus to defend him and his group. Birch killed one of them and the other one sprinted away.
After a while, they would come across the old Dunamis Base where Frost was kept in when he was kidnapped four years back. What they didn't know was that someone was watching them. From the skies, there flew the former prince of the Lunar Tribe, now the chief of the Eclipse Tribe, Tsukasa Haruki and his partner, a Hatzegopteryx named Scorchbeak. Tsukasa, along with his lover, Fla Alinta and her partner, Saber the Smilodon closed in on the group.
When they met, at first Birch and Markis intended to begin a fight due to them not knowing these people, Fla and Saber were also about to jump into action. That was before Tsukasa tried to deescalate the situation. After the misunderstanding, Markis told the couple that they simply came here to find someone important to them. To couple's surprise, he mentioned April's name.
The two lovers and their partners then led them to Mount Phoenix where the Eclipse Tribe resided. And when they got there, Markis, Abigail, and Ticaño finally reunited with April in a heartwarming moment, however, there was another reunion that would take place. But it wasn't a positive one.
Birch is a herbivore who's known to hold a grudge. And though Frost is an adult now and is a little different, the herbivore still recognized him just by his scent. Birch challenged Frost to a fight but the Albertosaurus was not in the mood for one unless Birch threatened April. From then on out, April would explain that she might know why the two hate each other. Because she also recognized Birch. And as Abigail and Ticaño were busy forming a bond with their own partners whom they've just met, Birch was busy trying to keep his distance from Frost just in case if he attacks.
The more the days went by, the more Markis and Birch began to bond. However, Birch was still cautious because Frost was still on his mind. Later on, Mount Phoenix would be ravaged by Dunamis Incorporated after the former princess of the Lunar Tribe, Yura Haruki, told them where the alliance was. During the attack, Birch had to deal with a number of Dunamis' dinosaurs. Mainly their Cryolophosaurus Legion and a fully grown Majungasaurus Acuticalvaria. Birch managed to defeat the Majungasaurus after he slammed it to the ground and used his front limbs to break the theropod's ribs.
During the attack, one of the Cryolophosaurus tried to ambush Birch and take his eyes out, but then Frost caught it midway through and crushed it in his mouth. The two dinosaurs shared a glace at each other before the Eclipse Tribe and the Fossil Riders left Mount Phoenix.
After the attack, both groups would form a plan to attack a Dunamis facility on one of Sauria's beaches. Since Markis and his group came to the island through Dunamis, they had a good idea on how to get to the facility without getting spotted. While they were planning out the assault, Birch wondered off to a nearby pond. In it, he saw Frost and another Albertosaurus named "Chilly" who was a romantic partner of his. Birch watched as the two of them drank from the pond and after that, they started to nuzzle each other. This made Birch wonder if he has been wrong about Albertosaurus this whole time. Perhaps there was more to them than he was led to believe.
During the assault on Dunamis, most of what Birch fought was the same. However, he was joined by Abigail's partner, Shade the Lambeosaurus, and Ticaño's partner, Barnum the Iguanacolossus, along with a Nothronychus named "Makiling". Their little group was called "The Vegan Squad". In the last segment of the fight, April fought with the current CEO of Dunamis, Gustin Shaw. Who wanted to kill April because she and her friends were the reason his father was electrocuted.
Gustin ordered his dinosaur slave, Icarus the Diabloceratops to finish off April. But Frost and Chilly stepped in to defend April. However, even though there were two of them, their strength was still not comparable to Icarus. The Ceratopsian charged for them but they didn't budge and simply roared at the beast to come closer. Icarus would not get the chance to get closer though, as Birch rammed the Ceratopsian from the side. Icarus attempted to stab the Hadrosaur before Shade and Barnum came to back Birch up by pushing Icarus further away from him. Makiling helped in restraining Icarus' horns using her arms which prevented him from stabbing any of them. Because the situation was getting worse, when Icarus wriggled his way free, he retreated. But he would soon come face-to-face with Solaire the Tyrannosaurus, who wanted the Ceratopsian dead after he injured the former's son.
Gustin was about to kill April. Her spear which has lasted for four years, had been broken and all that was left was the part near the tip of the knife which was tied onto the front. The CEO prepared to deliver the killing blow, but before he could do that Birch ran over and pushed Gustin back using his head. Markis then quickly jumped off of his partner and grabbed what remained of April's spear. He then lunged for Gustin and drove the tip of the spear straight through the man's chest. Before Gustin died, Markis smugly said that he would quit working for his accursed company.
When the fight was over, April and her family, along with her friends, Tobias and Koba, intended to return to the mainland. However, part of April didn't want to go for Frost's sake. And just before she got onto the ship that would take her home, Frost ran to the docking port and while he couldn't talk, he almost seemed like he was begging his rider not to leave. Because April had built up such a bond with Frost, she decided to stay on Sauria Island. And not only that, Markis asked his brother to go to the mainland to get the rest of their family. In his own words, he said that they just found their new home.
A few months after the battle, the remains of the Dunamis facility were used to construct a new structure. Along with that, any electronics that were left by Dunamis would be used by April's family. They used all the metal in the facility to make their own home once they moved to the new Eclipse Tribe Village known as Lunafurna. April's baby brother along with her cousins also started to live on the island. One of her cousins, Kara, said that she was interested in animal conservation which is why she decided to come. Her other cousin, Mani, on the other hand, said that he came so that he wouldn't have to deal with college.
Birch became a lot more laid back after that. He would still visit Vegetarian Heaven from time to time to check on his neighbors, and one day while he and his rider were out on a walk, they saw that Frost, April, Tobias Kaiwhe, his partner Makashin the Majungasaurus, along with Solaire's son, Torch, were hunting a herd of Edmontosaurus. At first, a part of Birch wanted to step in to stop the hunt, but then he looked at who the herd's leader was. It was the son of the herd leader who banished him. Because of this, he decided to stay out of it. If they won't accept him, he doesn't care what will happen to them. Although, two Edmontosaurus did manage to evade the theropods and the riders, and those two just happened to be his parents.
After Birch reunited with them, Markis took them to Lunafurna where they would spend the rest of their lives in. Free from the tyrants that ruled over their community.
Ten years later, nothing much happened to Birch. He has been bonding a little with Frost's children due to him becoming more accepting of Albertosaurus. Along with that, he's also got his eyes set on a potential mate.
In terms of personality, as mentioned before, he's very aggressive, but he does have a softer side that is more akin to what people come to expect from Hadrosaurs. He's fairly laid back and loves to be around animals and people who treat him fairly. He has a very good bond with his parents, and he even went as far as putting aside his hatred of Albertosaurus due to Frost not having any interest in hurting him anymore.
He does however, have a disdain when it comes to his former herd members. If they're not his parents, he's going to let them die. At one point during the ten year time skip, he actually considered challenging the new leader to a fight, and he also wanted to kill him if it was possible.
Traits/Attributes:
Physical Strength:
Unlike Iguanodontids like Iguanacolossus, Birch doesn't have thumb spikes. He doesn't even have fingers. But instead, he uses his weight to his advantage. He uses his front limbs to crush and beat his opponents, and unlike a lot of dinosaurs, he can actually use his tail as a weapon. He also has a tendency of ramming opponents.
Crest:
His crest is fairly prominent and is mainly used for display.
Posture:
Unlike most dinosaurs, he has two stances, a four legged stance and a two legged stance. He only ever walks on two legs whenever he's running or needs to reach a certain part of a tree he's feeding on.
Diet:
Intelligence and strength aren't the only thing this species has over their Cretaceous variants, they can also consume modern plants such as grass which wasn't common back in the Mesozoic.
Floating:
Like many of the dinosaurs, he cannot submerge underwater. But he only ever swims when he needs to cross a specific area during a migration process.
Sexual Dimorphism:
The males of this species have very prominent crests, while the females don't have any crests at all.
Kick:
If a predator is attacking from the back and manages to get past the tail, they will be met by a kick from one of the back legs. All Hadrosaurs and anything related to them on the island are known to do this if their tail cannot scare the predator away.
Heat Regulation:
Due to his bulk, his body can heat itself up. Which means he doesn't need feathers in order to keep himself warm during cold climates.
Trivia:
• Birch was supposed to be a throwaway character that would only show up during the part where Frost fights him. But I saw potential in him so I decided to bring him back for later entries.
• He gets him name from the patterns and colors on his body looking like the ones on birch trees.
• I chose Edmontosaurus to be Markis' partner due to his daughter also having a dinosaur who originated from Alaska.
• Birch's favorite thing to eat are called Sea Berries. They aren't actually found in the sea, they're just called that because the color they have resembles the sea itself. They're basically larger blueberries.
• Birch is the only herbivore thus far who hates his herd.
• He and Frost are actually similar. Frost was also casted out of his pack during his teen years. Like how Birch was exiled from his herd. Which kind of makes the two of them more similar than most people would think.
• Edmontosaurus Silvacustos is the largest Hadrosaur on the island and is only second to the largest herbivore on Sauria apart from Sauroposeidon Terradivisor.
• His snout and beak look a lot more duck like than usual depictions. This was done as a tribute to older Edmontosaurus depictions that were popular during the era when people thought that dinosaurs walked like kangaroos.
• The spines on his back were supposed to be bigger. But me and my brother sized them down to avoid making him look like his spine is breaking out of his back. If you're wondering how Markis rides him, he sits on Birch's neck and not his back.
• Frost biting his tail is actually a reference to a very popular specimen of Edmontosaurus which has a broken tail bone. It's theorized that this individual was hunted by a Tyrannosaurus and when the tyrant bit the tail, it broke a bone. However, the animal was also theorized to have survived the attack.
• Markis Aragon is the only one of the Fossil Riders who mainly uses a gun as his main weapon.
• Originally, he was going to feature thumb spikes which would've looked off on something like an Edmontosaurus. So I gave him a different weapon instead, his weight. If you ask me, having your ribs crushed by a ten ton herbivore is way worse than getting pierced by a thumb spike.
• Edmontosaurus Silvacustos is one of the only herbivores that can stand a chance against mega theropods. And on occasion, they are known to kill them once they've got them pinned.
• I had a clear vision in mind for Birch's character, along with Shade and Barnum. Hadrosaurs and Iguanodontids are usually portrayed as defenseless fodder. What I wanted to do was to create characters from those families and give them a role that would give them more to do than just run away. I mean, if you looked at Edmontosaurus in real life, it's not hard to imagine one of those fighting a Tyrannosaurus and winning.
• Most of Birch's design was based on E.regalis. Especially the crest.
• His sounds consist of modified cow and reindeer noises.
• If given the chance, he'd actually be able to kill Frost without a problem. He's basically a herbivore's equivalent to mega theropods due to how big and heavy he is.
• His average speed is 10 miles per hour. But he can boost it to 14 miles per hour if he gets a good sprint.
• Originally, I think Parasaurolophus might have been considered for his role. But because Edmontosaurus is my second favorite Hadrosaur, I couldn't resist adding it to the main cast.
• I really wanted a fight between the protagonist herbivores, and an antagonist herbivore. Which is why I had the Vegan Squad fight with Icarus for a bit.
• Surprisingly, he loves winter. Most herbivores usually don't since they have to find a place to rest and keep themselves warm. But due to Birch's bulk, his body can regulate heat for him. He mainly likes winter because as much as he likes living on the island, he hates it when it's hot. Unlike a lot of animals, he's one of the only ones who likes the cold.
• Me and my brother actually encountered a major issue when drawing his head. Normally, this doesn't happen, but because we aren't used to working on herbivores, the first sketch we made of his head was completely different to the one we have now. In fact, it didn't look like an Edmontosaurus. If I were to judge the first head as a drawing, it was actually really nicely done. The problem was, it looked too much like an Iguanodon. Ironic considering that one of the members of the Vegan Squad is an Iguanacolossus which has a very similar appearance to an Iguanodon.
•I did consider giving him a Mexican name. But I decided not to. The reason why was because I wanted the name of Markis' partner to match his daughter's partner. What I mean by that is, I wanted his name to be related to his appearance. Frost was named after his white feathers and Birch was named after his color patterns.
