A new member of Ctenochasmatidae has been described, Spathagnathus roeperi! It is the oldest member of its subfamily, Gnathosaurinae, dating back 151 million years ago during the Kimmeridgian of the Late Jurassic.

Its generic name means "spatula jaw," and its unique teeth may have helped with a diet for hard-shelled prey.

It is the second pterosaur named from the Solnhofen's Brunn quarry, and it coexisted with the rhamphorhynchid Bellubrunnus.
