If you’re familiar with ammonites, you may also be familiar with ‘heteromorph’ ammonites, often known in the field of paleontology as the ‘Ancyloceratina’, a suborder of ammonites restricted to the Cretaceous and early Paleogene periods, however what you may not be familiar with were another group of heteromorph ammonites that lived within the Triassic period - the Choristocerataceae
The Choristocerataceae were a group of Triassic ceratitid ammonites with remarkably dissonant shells quite like those of the Ancyloceratina. Among one of those was Cochloceras, an ammonite with a shell coiled in a way that makes it resemble an auger shell.
The first prolecanitid ammonite I made for this portrait
It was a fairly typical ammonite that lived during the Carboniferous
This is yet another remake of this picture I made back in early 2022: https://dinopedia.fandom.com/f/p/4400000000000107996
This is also, not coincidentally, the 2nd clymeniid ammonite, and a more conventional one at that.
(and also, these drawings are not meant to represent the true size of the ammonites in relation to one another.)
I am currently drawing a portrait in which I draw and showcase 2 genera of each ammonite order (for the Ammonitida, 2 of each suborder).
This is Kamptoclymenia, an ammonite known fir its recognizably triangular (albeit with rounded corners) shell. It was a genus of clymeniid that lived during the Devonian period.
