Suchomimus tenerensis was a large ceratosuchopsid baryonychine from the albian of early Cretaceous Niger. Its known for a long tooth filled snout and robust arms, a very enigmatic trait for a theropod but normal for the spinosaurids. One thing about Suchomimus that's been commonly known is it not being considered a true “megatheropod”. A megatheropod is any theropod dinosaur over 5 tonnes in weight.
That is because of a gracile build, small head, and light bone frame. However in more recent times, Suchomimus is much heavier than previously thought and might be considered a megatheropod after all.
In a 2025 study by Matt Dempsey and his colleagues, the body mass of various dinosaurs was tested and new estimates were established.
The study argues theropods are underestimated in terms of weight due to a lack of soft tissue being taken into account.Acrocanthosauruswas the highlight for most, with it jumping from 5 to 6 tonnes to nearly 8 tonnes.
...but Suchomimus was estimated in the same paper and has increased in size drastically too. According to this new model, Suchomimus now weighs up to 5,260 kilograms (5.3 tonnes).
While some estimates in the past gave Suchomimusa similar body mass, they were ultimately considered overestimates.
Most studies don't consider Suchomimusto weigh over 3.2 tonnes, let alone 5. This is significant as it implies All spinosaurids should likely increase in size as well.
