Amazing find! A massive neck and small ears are typical features of a northern mammal adapted to cold climates. But the color is surprising: not white or gray, but brown. Perhaps for camouflage in sandy cliffs or in forests.

The mammoth steppe was pretty much snowy only during winter, so it makes sense that most animals from the ecosystem don't have white or gray fur (e.g. cave lions, mammoths, woolly rhinos, steppe bison, horses, muskox). Tundra animals with white fur tend to be on the smaller side, like hares and foxes.

This is insanely cool.

By the way, authors say that the longest hair grows on the back and neck. Probably for camouflage in dry grass. The same thing is observed in today's cheetahs.
