Some people define birds as the last common ancestor of all modern birds and all of its descendants (Neornithines), which evolved during the Late Cretaceous. Others consider all avialans to be birds, which would include animals like Archaeopteryx and Confuciusornis. But Archaeopteryx's status as a bird is disputed.
